Convergence and stability properties of minimal polynomial and reduced rank extrapolation algorithms

    Get PDF
The minimal polynomial and reduced rank extrapolation algorithms are two acceleration of convergence methods for sequences of vectors. In a recent survey these methods were tested and compared with the scalar, vector, topological epsilon algorithms, and were observed to be more efficient than the latter. It was also observed that the two methods have similar convergence properties. The convergence and stability properties of these methods are analyzed and the performance of the acceleration methods when applied to a class of vector sequences that includes those sequences obtained from systems of linear equations by using matrix iterative methods is discussed

Numerical quadrature methods for integrals of singular periodic functions and their application to singular and weakly singular integral equations

    Get PDF
High accuracy numerical quadrature methods for integrals of singular periodic functions are proposed. These methods are based on the appropriate Euler-Maclaurin expansions of trapezoidal rule approximations and their extrapolations. They are used to obtain accurate quadrature methods for the solution of singular and weakly singular Fredholm integral equations. Such periodic equations are used in the solution of planar elliptic boundary value problems, elasticity, potential theory, conformal mapping, boundary element methods, free surface flows, etc. The use of the quadrature methods is demonstrated with numerical examples

Noether's Theorem for Control Problems on Time Scales

We prove a generalization of Noether's theorem for optimal control problems defined on time scales. Particularly, our results can be used for discrete-time, quantum, and continuous-time optimal control problems. The generalization involves a one-parameter family of maps which depend also on the control and a Lagrangian which is invariant up to an addition of an exact delta differential. We apply our results to some concrete optimal control problems on an arbitrary time scale.Comment: This is a preprint of a paper whose final and definite form is published in International Journal of Difference Equations ISSN 0973-6069, Vol. 9 (2014), no. 1, 87--10

Revisiting Barriers to Trade: Do Foregone Health Benefits Matter?

    Get PDF
This paper examins the question of revisiting the imposition of existing trade barriers in one case of an evolving marketplace – when a traditional food product is altered to provide, or discovered to have, human health benefits that increases their value to consumers. In other words, the food becomes a functional food. A functional food has the potential provide direct benefits to consumers as well as indirect benefits to society in the form of health care cost savings. If the trade barrier was put in place prior to these direct and indirect benefits of the food becoming apparent, then they would not have been considered when the decision to impose the trade barrier was taken. In these circumstances, policy makers may wish to revisit a decision to impose a trade barrier.trade health, Agricultural and Food Policy, Health Economics and Policy, International Relations/Trade,

Acceleration of convergence of vector sequences

    Get PDF
A general approach to the construction of accelerated convergence methods for vector sequences is proposed. A simplified version of minimal polynomial extrapolation is emphasized. The convergence of this method is analyzed and it is shown that it is especially suitable for accelerating the convergence of vector sequences that are obtained when one solves linear systems of equations iteratively

Optimal Control of Nonlocal Thermistor Equations

We are concerned with the optimal control problem of the well known nonlocal thermistor problem, i.e., in studying the heat transfer in the resistor device whose electrical conductivity is strongly dependent on the temperature. Existence of an optimal control is proved. The optimality system consisting of the state system coupled with adjoint equations is derived, together with a characterization of the optimal control. Uniqueness of solution to the optimality system, and therefore the uniqueness of the optimal control, is established. The last part is devoted to numerical simulations.Comment: Submitted 21-March-2012; revised 11-June-2012; accepted 13-June-2012; for publication in the International Journal of Contro

Konversi Sistem Absensi Karyawan Pada Sekolah Tinggi Manajemen Informatika (STMIK) Asia

The uses of technology in daily organization operational becomes ordinary thing. The optimum technology uses are the use technology that align with the need of the users in order gaining efficiency and inclining productivity. STMIK Asia has used finger print absensce media for recording its employees attendence.Yet, the attendence machine that has been used for a long period, can not accomodate the Human Resource Department's need in order to observe its employee presence during working-hours.The emergence information regarding the employee presence during working hours, is supported by manual written absence book. However, this manual written book, can not provide a real-time information the presence of the employee. Furthermore, in the end of the period, recapitulation absence book become a burden, take a lot of time for inputting data to the computer. Thus, STMIK Asia adopting other technology in order to fulfill the need of Human Resource Department. The new adapted technology is not a more modern or sophisticated machine, however the new technology accomodates employees attendence system that align with STMIK Asia needs
